The Client

The University of Salford is a globally recognised educational institution with a long-standing reputation for innovation, research, and industry collaboration. Since receiving its Royal Charter in 1967, the university has grown into an international community of more than 23,000 students, 2,500 staff, and over 170,000 alumni from around the world.

The university is particularly focused on research and development linked to the future of industry and technology, with strengths in robotics, digital innovation, autonomous systems, smart living, and advanced healthcare technologies. Working closely with industry partners, the university continues to invest in modern infrastructure and facilities that support education, research, and operational excellence.

As part of maintaining a safe and compliant campus environment, the university approached Harcon Services to review potential fall risks associated with an unguarded internal roof area.

The Brief

Harcon Services was contacted by the University of Salford, an existing client, to assess safety concerns surrounding an internal roof area that lacked adequate edge protection. The university wanted to ensure that anyone accessing the roof for maintenance or inspection work could do so safely and in compliance with current work-at-height regulations.

Following the initial enquiry, Harcon attended site to conduct a detailed survey of the roof area. During the visit, our Technical Sales Engineer met directly with the university’s Health & Safety Manager to discuss the specific risks present and the practical requirements for improving safety.

The survey identified that the unguarded roof area posed a potential fall hazard for maintenance personnel and contractors accessing the space. The objective was to provide a compliant, long-term safety solution that aligned with the hierarchy of control and prioritised collective protection over reliance on personal protective equipment (PPE).

The university required a solution that would:

  • Improve safety for anyone accessing the roof area.
  • Meet the latest UK safety legislation and standards.
  • Minimise ongoing maintenance and operational complexity.
  • Protect the roof structure without requiring invasive fixings or penetrations.

The Solution

Following the site survey and consultation, Harcon proposed the installation of a combined Kee Guard edge protection system and Kee Gate self-closing safety gates.

Kee Guard Edge Protection

Kee Guard was selected as the ideal solution for securing exposed roof edges. As a modular, free-standing guardrail system, Kee Guard provides permanent collective protection without penetrating the roof membrane. This non-invasive design protects the integrity of the roof while ensuring compliance with UK Work at Height Regulations and relevant international standards.

One of the key advantages of Kee Guard is that it removes the need for PPE and specialist user training in protected areas. By providing continuous collective protection, the system simplifies safe roof access while eliminating the need for complex rescue procedures.

Kee Guard is also one of the few guardrail systems in the world to comply with BS 13700:2021, helping ensure alignment with the latest safety legislation.

Kee Gate Access Protection

To secure designated access points, Harcon also installed Kee Gate self-closing safety gates. These gates create controlled access points and help prevent accidental exposure to fall hazards when entering or exiting roof areas.

Durable, Long-Term Safety Solution

The systems installed were designed with durability and long-term performance in mind. Kee Guard components are galvanised inside and out with a proprietary protective coating, providing excellent corrosion resistance even in demanding environments.

The modular slip-on design also allowed installation to be carried out quickly and efficiently, helping minimise disruption to university operations while reducing installation costs.

Following submission of the quotation, the university approved the proposal and Harcon scheduled the installation works.

The Outcome

Harcon successfully installed the Kee Guard and Kee Gate systems, transforming the internal roof area into a safe and fully compliant working environment.

The new systems now provide continuous collective protection for maintenance personnel and contractors accessing the roof, significantly reducing fall risks while simplifying ongoing safety management.

Key Customer Benefits Delivered

  • Durable and corrosion resistant: Galvanised components designed for long-term use in demanding environments.
